VA Prescott: Primary Care PACT

Apogee is the prime contractor for this project to expand the VA facility in Prescott, Ariz., providing project management and design services to transform the primary care facility from a small clinical space with various services into a patient-aligned care teams (PACT) module complete with a new campus entry.

Our team has created a design concept that features a waiting area with natural light and convenient access. As patients move into the clinic, there is a wide, main corridor with alcoves for scales that leads to smaller corridors with exam and consultation rooms, and simplified wayfinding.

There are two PACT modules. Each module includes clean supply, medication, equipment alcoves, and soiled holding rooms located directly off of teamwork areas.

The original goal of the client was to combine all primary care teams from two buildings. However, Apogee demonstrated that achieving all 19 teams in a PACT module within 18,600 square feet is not functional. Instead, we developed a strategy that placed 11 teams in a re-envisioned building that leaves space for future renovations.

The exterior design is simple, blending with the existing building while incorporating the new entry with a raised element of ample glass with a stone base for contrast with the exterior white stucco. An exterior walkway leads from the new lobby space to several other buildings to enhance access to the entire VA campus.

The interior design concept uses durable, cleanable materials to create a comforting, healing environment. Accent colors of beige, blue and green complement the cream field color. Flooring uses two-toned, wood-look luxury vinyl planks to support wayfinding.

In lieu of carpet, a resilient flooring with an acoustical backing will be used in the team areas to improve sound control. The waiting and reception area is enhanced with decorative resin panel privacy panels, a wallcovering mural and specialty lighting.

Exam, consultation and procedure rooms will use a rail modular casework system for uniformity and ease of reconfiguration in the future.
