Project

VA Tuskegee Building 10

Apogee revitalized a vacant 1923 VA building into a state-of-the-art Whole Health facility, blending historic preservation with modern design to create a restorative environment for Veterans.

Apogee partnered with the Department of Veterans Affairs to transform historic Building 10—a two-story, 12,500-square-foot brick structure built in 1923—into a modern home for the VA’s Whole Health programs. After years of vacancy and deterioration caused by roof damage, the building required a complete interior renewal while preserving its historic character.

The redesigned facility now supports a wide range of Whole Health offerings, including yoga, tai chi, art classes, sound therapy, coaching, and group education. Large multipurpose rooms feature tunable, dimmable lighting to create a calming atmosphere, while dedicated display walls showcase Veteran artwork. Classrooms and coaching rooms were planned to foster learning, personal development, and overall well-being for Veterans.

To honor the original architecture, the exterior brick walls were preserved and stabilized while the interior superstructure, floors, roof, and building systems were fully replaced. This approach maintained the building’s historic presence while allowing for a complete modernization within.

The project includes a full wet-pipe fire sprinkler system serving all levels of the building, along with a new fire alarm system with voice evacuation. Apogee’s electrical team provided a new 600A service, medium-voltage transformer, and main service panel to support long-term reliability. Additional upgrades include a new multi-stop elevator, an entirely new HVAC system, energy-efficient LED lighting, updated finishes, and a reconfigured layout designed to create a welcoming, contemporary environment for patient care and staff. All work was completed in compliance with the VA’s Physical Security and Resiliency Design Manual.
