VA Charleston: Legionella Compliance

Apogee provided a master plan followed by corrections within the potable water system at the Charleston VA Medical Center for compliance with the Legionella guidelines specified in VHA Directive 1061, Prevention of Healthcare Associated Legionella Disease and Scald Injury from Potable Water Distribution Systems.

The project included:

  • Complete facility survey and mapping of entire facility domestic water lines; this included the creation of CAD drawings for reference
  • Design of a new, dedicated on-site conditioning plant that houses all equipment to treat and monitor incoming water
  • Continuous incoming water sampling and monitoring for the facility including pressure, temperature, pH, dissolved solids, and oxidant residual
  • Addition of mixing valves at hot water outlets
  • Evaluation of existing hot water return system and methods to fix deficiencies and promote proper circulation for temperature retention
  • Construction drawings for the correction of dead legs and hot water return system upgrades
  • Storing and chilling incoming potable cold-water supply via a chiller and heat exchangers to meet appropriate temperatures
